Our Events & Gatherings

Fast of Tevet

Friday, Jan 10th / the 10th of Tevet

History: The Fast of Tevat aka Asara B'Tevet occurs on the 10th of Tevet (Jan 10th) and is a minor Jewish fast day commemorating events that led to the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem. This day marks the beginning of the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem in 588 BCE, with the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. This tragic event is one of the key steps in Jewish history leading to the exile of the Jewish people from their land.
Observance: Personally observed with a minor fast from sunrise-to-sunset. Work is permitted. Prayers such as the Selichot (penitential prayers) and the Aneinu during the Amidah are recited.
Readings: Ex 32:11-14 and 34:1-10

New Trees - Tu B'Shevat

Feb 13, Observed on Shabbat Oneg, Feb 15th

New Year for trees, a Jewish holiday celebrating the importance of trees and nature.

  • Tu B'Shevat is mentioned in the Mishnah (Rosh Hashanah 1:1) as one of the four "New Years"
  • Trees symbolize life, growth, and divine blessings. It serves as a reminder of humanity's role as stewards of the earth.
  • It is customary to eat fruits associated with the Land of Israel, especially the seven species mentioned in the Torah:
    • Wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates.
  • Today in Israel, Tu B'Shevat has become a day for planting trees and environmental awareness. Much like our Arbor Day.

Observance: We will celebrate this day during a special Shabbat oneg with a Tu B'Shebat seder.  This year will be on Shabbat, Feb 15th following our service.
